Describe the company – the elevator pitch …
Firemole is a patent pending, first of its kind, safety tech gadget that protects you, your home and your family from faulty, ageing or counterfeit electronic and electrical devices. Firemole is installed in seconds and sounds an inbuilt alarm once a temperature of over 54°C is detected.
We are taking a pro-active step against fire and Firemole will, at the very least, give users some peace of mind, but at the very best, Firemole could save a life a home or a business.
How are you different?
Unlike fire detectors, Firemole is focusing on fire prevention over fire detection. Firemole brings fire safety to a personal level by monitoring the devices we use everyday; chargers, phones, tablets or even standard plug-tops. If people can be given an early warning of rising temperatures, it can make all the difference.
Why will the company / product do well?
The reason Firemole is so appealing to consumers, is that it is extremely easy to use. All the user needs to do is pull the battery tab from the back, peel the film from the adhesive base and press Firemole against the device that they want to monitor. Firemole is addressing a concern that many people have, particularly parents, about devices overheating.
We have a solid product pipeline in place and we are already working on the next generation of Firemole which includes some very modern and exciting tech.
Where are you based?
Bank of Ireland have sponsored Firemole with a space in Republic of Work in Cork so that is where we are working out of currently.
When was the company launched?
Firemole launched just last week with a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. We are shipping now so there is no waiting around for your Firemoles. We are 49% to our goal and have a month left so hopefully we will hit the €10k. We have already shipped out orders to the US, Canada, Sweden and of course Ireland. All the feedback has been very positive which is great.
What have been your biggest wins to date?
We were chosen for the New Frontiers Phase 2 Program which got things moving for us. The Cork City LEO granted us €15,000 Feasibility funding and EI granted us a €5000 innovation voucher.
Probably the thing we are most proud of is winning the Most Innovative Product Award from the E.I New Frontiers Program and also getting over €2000 in Pre-Orders in 24hours in May.
What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract to your product?
Firemole is a product for everyone, but with children now having so many electronic devices in their rooms, we are targeting parents initially.
Other potential customers who have shown interest are avid users of electronics and the insurance industry who we are currently in negotiations with.
Tell us about your team?
I (Sean) worked as an electrician for years and saw many instances where electrical and electronic devices malfunctioned and destroyed homes and businesses. I worked in the solar photovoltaic industry in Australia for two years, doing everything from lead generation to sales and installation.
Paschal O’Leary has years of experience in manufacturing and was COO of Spectel, an Irish company which sold for €120m, and previous to that, he was Senior Director of Operations for Motorola.
I have two others that work with me 1 day a week but unfortunately, they cannot be mentioned as they’re currently working for other companies.
What are your long term plans for your product / company?
The current version of Firemole is a product that will be sold directly to consumers through retailers and we also plan for it to be used by the insurance industry either directly, by giving them to customers, or indirectly, by offering discounts on premiums for customers who use them.
We have had interest from distributor around the world so we have been putting the facilities in place to allow us to scale quickly. We will be raising a seed round of €250k privately and once that is done it will allow us to expand to international markets.
We will also be focusing heavily on R&D to get the next version on the market within 18 months.
What are your favourite tech gadgets?
Apart from the peace of mind my Firemole gives me, I get a lot of use out of my GoPro
What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?
I’m thinking of getting Alexa or Google Home just to see what it’s like.
